The Way Youth

Saul “went to the high priest  and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem.” – Acts 9:2.

The Way was a name attached to the early followers of Jesus. And it is the name attached to the youth ministry at Northwest Hills United Methodist Church. That name has become the name of our ministry because we want to be known as followers of Jesus; followers of His Way.

What is Jesus’ way? “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” – Matthew 22:37-39

Jesus told us we must also, “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” – John 14:34-35

It also means putting Jesus first in our lives. “Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” – Luke 9:23.

We follow Jesus’ way because He is the Way. “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” – John 14:6

With the entire group striving to follow Jesus and love one another, when you're here, you should feel safe to be yourself. All the posturing and posing that takes place at school is left at the door. You are in a safe place to uncover your inner self no matter who that may be.

We have fun. We enjoy each other's company. We share our joys and our burdens with one another. And we seek a closer relationship with Jesus Christ, who is the overriding reason for us meeting together in the first place.

The Way Games: Sundays, 5-6:30 p.m. (Free meal is 6-6:30 p.m.) Fellowship Hall. This is for all 6th through 12th grade youth who enjoy crazy games and good food. We hang out, play games that are sometimes physically challenging, sometimes mentally challenging and sometimes just plain hilarious. We shift gears with a short devotional time and then share a meal together.

The Way Worship: Wednesdays, 6:30-8 p.m. Fellowship Hall. This is for all 6th – 12th graders. It is still a fun time of enjoying each others’ company. But this is when we come together to worship God through music, through Bible study and through small group interaction. This is where we challenge each other to seek out an authentic relationship with the authentic Savior of the world. (Also, the church shares in a $2 snack supper from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the kitchen area outside Fellowship Hall.)

Check out the calendar for the events we have coming up including winter retreats, summer camp and summer mission trips.

Sunday School: 9:45 a.m. 2nd floor of the Education building. We have a Confirmation class for sixth graders that runs approximately the length of the school year. Through dynamic teaching, confirmands learn about the meaning of Christian faith; the history and teachings and The United Methodist Church; and an explanation of the baptismal and membership vows they will be professing.

7th through 12th graders are in a revolving six-year study through Student Life Bible Study. The classes are: 7th-8th grade girls, 7th-8th grade boys, 9th-10th graders, 11th-12th graders.

All classes are in the midst of the 48-week Christstudy. By the end of 12th grade, students will have gone through the entire Bible without ever having a rehashed lesson or a last-minute, thrown-together study. The curriculum is very flexible for different styles of learning and for different ages.
